May 16, 2013: Goshen - A disturbing discovery for police in Goshen. Officers were called to an apparent vacant home in the 400 block of 5th Street around 8:00 pm on Wednesday. Inside, they found a 4 year-old and a 3 month-old. Police describe the home as not safe for living condition. The children were not harmed. They appeared to be in good health but investigators believe it had been several hours since they were fed. Officers took the children to the police department. They are now in the care of the Department of Child Services. No word, yet, about what charges could be filed. Read More

Officials say an SUV driven by Stacy Blosser of Goshen was southbound on US 33 -- preparing to turn into the school parking lot when she turned in front of Ned Shisler.. May 16, 2013: WARSAW -- Warsaw police are asking for your help in catching a man wanted for theft and fraud. 30-year-old Christopher Clapp is wanted in Montana, Ohio, and now Indiana. Brooke Bays told police she rented Clapp a hotel room when he needed a place to say and a week later, her credit cards were missing. He’s described as a white male around 6'2 with black hair and a goatee. He also has a distinctive dragoon tattoo on his shoulder. May 14, 2013: FORT WAYNE -- Several area schools have achieved Four Star status. In order to achieve this designation, a school must be in the top 25th percentile of schools in ISTEP testing results. May 14, 2013: GOSHEN -- Hundreds of Goshen children may have to find another way to school this fall. At a school board meeting Monday night, a study group recommended several changes to help deal with a million dollar budget shortfall. The short term solutions include eliminating field trips, expanding walk zones and changing the start and end times for all schools. Also being considered is getting rid of all bus routes in 3 years. The school board will discuss that option at its next meeting on May 28. Read More
May 14, 2013: PLYMOUTH -- A Plymouth man is dead after his clothing got caught in a shaft connecting an engine to an irrigation device. 61-year-old Rick Pertics was killed Monday in a blueberry field west of LaPaz, near the intersection of 1A and Oak Road. Pertics is the owner of Pertics’ Blueberry Plantation. He told his wife he would be working on the equipment in a field during the night. When his family couldn’t contact him the next morning, they went to the field and found his body. Read More
May 14, 2013: KOSCIUSKO COUNTY -- The latest economic news is relatively positive for Kosciusko County. According to the US Cenus, Kosciusko County is described as “stable” when it comes to the number of business establishments in 2011 compared to same survey in the year 2000. According to the report, Kosciusko County had 11 fewer businesses only Allen County’s 6 was better in our area. The survey finds that as a state, Indiana is 5th in the nation and best by a wide margin compared to its neighbors. Read More
May 10, 2013: Warsaw- This month’s Kosciusko County Council meeting was largely about fund transfers that were discussed in previous months, including a nearly $1 million expenditure for road work proposed Kosciusko County Highway Superintendent Scott Tilden. \During last night’s meeting, the transfer of the funds from the Economic Development Income Tax fund to the highway department was approved. The approximately $1.1 million approval will be used for several road improvement projects to be completed this year. Currently, the county uses E.D.I.T. funds to pay for the Justice Building, which will paid off in 2015. Last night’s transfer was approved after the county advertised their intent. A list of projects will be advertised for bids and, as the bids are received, the county will decide which of the road projects will get attention this year. Read More
May 10, 2013: FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - The Indiana National Guard is trying to help some soldiers who expected being deployed to Africa starting next month find jobs. The 293rd Infantry Regiment based in Fort Wayne planned a job fair Friday at its armory with about 30 employers. Indiana Guard Sgt. 1st Class Matthew Scotten tells The Journal Gazette the job fair was organized to help soldiers who planned on being on the deployment for nearly a year. The Army in March called off several overseas deployments because of automatic federal budget cuts. That included the 500-member Fort Wayne unit's assignment to a task force providing security in Ethiopia, Kenya and other East African nations. Read More
May 10, 2013: BREMEN- One of Indiana’s most popular lawmakers was laid to rest this morning. Thousands gathered in Bremen to pay final respects to former Governor Otis Bowen who died last weekend at the age of 95. Bowen was a family doctor who estimated he delivered 3,000 babies before making a run for Governor in 1972 and serving two terms in office. He then worked under President Reagan as Secretary of Health and Human Services, and is credited with helping find solutions and calm fears during the then-growing AIDS scare. Read More
May 10, 2013 : COLUMBIA CITY- A body found in Whitley County this week is that of a Fort Wayne man. Authorities say the body of 21-year old Dillon Travis Warner was found in a wooded area in eastern Whitley County Wednesday. May 9, 2013 WARSAW- A second Warsaw woman has been arrested for her alleged involvement in the reported abuse of a 4-year-old toddler. Sheriff’s Department deputies arrested 30-year old Jolene Marie Swihart in her home last evening and charged her with battery resulting in serious bodily injury to a victim less than 14-years-old. Deputies and the Department of Child Services initially began an investigation Monday at the same residence that led to the arrest of 26-year old Sherena Michele Harris and similar charges. Investigators say they have evidence that Swihart had also kicked and potentially injured the same child on other previous occasions. Swihart was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail on a $5,000 bond. Read More
